Travel guide to Oban
Oban Harbour
Oban Harbour
Sea should be either beautiful or busy – preferably both. There’s no shortage of scenic coast line in western Scotland, which can rival anywhere in this respect. However busy ports are now in short supply and certainly no other can touch Oban, the gateway to the isles. Calmac ferries go to Lismore, Mull, Colonsay, Islay, Coll, Tiree and both Uists, leving only the Small Isles and Harris/Lewis to be serviced from farther north and Arran and Gigha farther south.
At the top of the town is a folly, McCaig’s Tower, a sort of Colosseum lookalike, which was originally intended to have a more chimney-like tower inside it.
Oban is connected by sail to Glasgow or you can change at Crianlarich for the Fort William and Mallaig line. Wow! By road there is the A85 to Crianlarich, the A828 to Fort William and the A816 to Lochgilphead, where it joins the A83 down the apparently never-ending peninsula to Campbelltown and the Mull of Kintyre.
