Travel guide to Port Sunlight
Port Sunlight is one of a number of model villages in England, built by wealthy philanthropic capitalists as living places for their workers. This one dates from hte later 19th century and was built at the expense of a soap manufacturer, William Hesketh Lever. Its cottage hospital was well in frnt of its time. Lever personally financed the school and the Lady Lever Art Gallery as well as a Technical Institute.
The garden village has streets which are of reasonable width even by modern standards and the Lady Lever gallery is home to a substantial collection of pre-Raphaelite paintings as well as housing many prestigious temporary exhibitions.
The village is now run by The Port Sunlight Village Trust. Previously it came under a subsidiary of Unilever who took it over from the Lever brothers. [edit text]  [editors]
