Travel guide to Porthmadog
Porthmadog is a great venue for a holiday, being poised on the edge of the mountains of the Snowdonia Nationa Park, the Lleyn Peninsular, a Site of Outstanding Natural Beauty and being en route for Harlech and Mid Wales.
In particular, it's the terminus of the Ffestiniog Railway, a preserved steam railway by which the slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog was once brought down to the coast and one of the most scenic in the UK.
It also has the boon of being near to the imitation Italian town of Portmeirion, where the pottery of that brand name is to be found. Not much farther is Criccieth, once home to David Lloyd-George, with a scenic castle.
Inland, it's no distance to the two slate museums of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Two power stations can be visited, one at Blaenau powered by water and the nuclear power centre at Trawsfynnydd. [edit text]  [editors]
