Travel guide to Portsmouth

Portsmouth benefits from being a ferry port which links north-west France, northern Spain and the Channel Islands.

Situated on the south coast of England, it has been the home of the British Royal Navy for over 500 years. But there is a complete mix of things to do from viewing the historic ships, castles, forts, shopping and museums.

HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship (where he saw his demise) stands majestically in the Dockyard alongside HMS Warrior. In 1860 it was the largest, fastest and first iron-clad battleship. Also there are remains of Henry VIII's 16th century warship, the Mary Rose and the D-Day Museum which depicts the invasion of Europe in 1944.

On a literary note, Portsmouth was the birthplace of Charles Dickens and also Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes here.
