Travel guide to Rochdale

Rochdale is one of the metropolitan boroughs in Greater Manchester.

It embraces Wardle and Littleborough, which gives it easy access to the moors of the South Pennines and to Yorkshire as well as to large expanses of open space in Lancashire. It also embraces Middleton, where the church of St Lawrence is a grade 1 listed building with a wooded spire.

Rochdale Town, itself, has two features of note. One is its excellent Victorian town hall; this great building is positioned by gardens and makes a fine sight. The second is the Rochdale Pioneer’s Museum, which was where the Co-operative movement originated in England in the delightfully named Toad Lane.

The Rochdale Canal between Manchester and Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire was the first modern transport link between Lancashire and the woollen towns of Yorkshire. Much of it is highly scenic and it deserves more visitors than its northern position relative to the famous Midlands canals allows. [edit text] [editors]
