Around 40 miles from the centre of London is Rochester in the heart of Kent and one of the Medway towns (the Medway is the river that flows almost entirely Kent). During the summer it is a lovely place to spend the day by exploring the castle and cathedral, both dating back the the Norman era. The neighbouring town is Chatham and has a wonderful Naval dockyard to explore. In early June (around the time of his death) the town comes to life with a Charles Dickens festival, celebrating the novelist. It really is a fun time to visit as walking lanes you see characters of his novels dressed in Victorian costumes. What is also fun is some of the names of the victorian shops also lends their names from Dickens novels. There is also another Dickens festival which centres round his novel 'A Christmas Carole' which is held at the end of the year.

It is a place for a great day out and enjoy a bit of English heritage. [edit text]  [editors]
