Travel guide to Rum Island

Rum is the largest of the Small Isles – not a contradiction – that lie south of Mallaig [qv]. Most people who go there have already been to Skye and they may expect a sort of copy, since Rum not only has its own Cuillin Mountains but one of them is called Sgurr nan Gillean! However this almost ends what they have in common.
Rum was once a thriving island but it suffered terribly from the highland clearances and the population of 400 odd was deported. More recently the building of a 20th century ‘castle’ at Kinloch and its upkeep provided employment but the castle’ once a marvellous example of Edwardian luxury, is now falling into ruin. You may find sites on the web that say it is still a luxury hotel but don’t hold your breath – they are well out of date – see www.kcfa.org.uk/Informa tion/appraisal.html
The island is a very rich nature reserve and its Cuillins, topping 2600 feet provide a superb walk and breathtaking views of other islands.
