St. Albans is the oldest town in Hertfordshire and full of history. Despite being only 20 miles from London it is often overlooked as a destination for day-trippers. Starting out as a Celtic Iron Age settlement called Verlamion at the end of the first century BC, it has played its part in the drafting of the Magna Carta, the Peasants Revolt, The War of the Roses and the English Civil War. Present day St Albans is a popular commuter town but also holds great interest for the visitor with many historical sites and much of the area around the Abbey and Market Place retaining its medieval buildings dating from the 15th Century.
