Among all Scotland's offshore islands the Summer Islands are not among the best known. There are about 20 islands in the group but only the largest one, Tanera Mor, now has houses and most of these will be empty in winter, although the school, now a vacation rental with some art and photography courses in the summer months, once had well over 20 pupils.
Strangely, Tanera Mor has a post office which prints its own stamps by agreement with the Royal Mail! The building also serves as a snack bar and is a good shelter from Scottish midges [gnats.] These are like small mosquitos but don't carry malaria. They just eat you and the result is small lumps which itch remorselessly.
Perhaps the very best cliff scenery is to be seen on Tanera Beg, where the Torridonian sandstone rocks produce caves and arches of spectacular beauty,
During the breeding season most of Britain's seabirds can be seen but by September there are few. However grey and common seals do their very best to compensate! [edit text]  [editors]
