Travel guide to Tavistock
Tavistock is an extremely pleasant and friendly town on the edge of Dartmoor. It used to be on the route for the lowest bridge over the Tamar into Cornwall until the saltash road bridge replaced the old chain ferry from Plymouth [the ferry to Torpoint still exists]. The main road, [A386] from Plymouth continues across a very scenic stretch of the moor to Okehampton, where it joins the A30.
The direct route into Cornwall via Gunnislake is now relatively peaceful and very attractive and goes close to the outdoor museum at Morwellham.
Tavistock has an interesting history as one of the four stannary towns [those based on tin mining] which had their own Parliament and laws, tried cases in their own Stannary Courts and even sent offenders to their own prison in nearby Lydford. [edit text]  [editors]
