Travel guide to Tewkesbury
Tewkesbuty Abbey
Tewkesbuty Abbey
Tewkesbury, situated between the cathedral cities of Gloucester and Worcester, is as much worth visiting as either [meant as high praise,]

The abbey is a magnificent building, much still as it was in the 11th century and with one of the world's finest Norman [Romanesque] towers. The majority of the remainder is in the decorated [Middle Gothic] syle of the 14th century. Yhere is an outstanding collection of medieval tombs inside and some exceptionally fine trees outside.

There are still a considerable number of housesin the main streets of the town with overlapping eaves from the 16th century. The novel, John Halifax, Gentleman - published in the mid 19th century - was based on Tewkesbury and the old mill by the river, recently converted into tasteful appartments still enjoys the name given there, 'Abel Fletcher's Mill.'
