Wells Cathedral

Wells is the smallest city in England. Like Saint David's in Wales it owes its status as a city entirely to its cathedral, which is noted as one of the country's most beautiful, deserved fame in a land of beautiful cathedrals.
It was started [the present building] in the 12th century but its most prized view, the western facade, comes from the 13th. It would be hard to overstate its appeal and much of the best Early English architecture in England is to be found here.
On the other hand you may find more appeal in the 'jousting' clock which is connected to external 'knights' outside the cathedral, who ring bells on the quarter hour.
A noted feature of Wells consists of the mute swans, which have been trained to tug a rope that rings a bell at feeding time. These are in the remains of the moat round the old Bishop's Palace.
The market Place with arches leading towards the Cathedral is also well worth seeing. [edit text] [editors]
