Widdecombe[-in-the-Moor] is probably best known for a song, Widdecombe Fair, making it Devon's answer to Yorkshire's Ilkley. However its appeal is not confined to the possibility of seeing the ghost of Tam Pearce's grey mare appearing ghastly white.
It's a fine moorland village with a granite church, where the huge tower has acquired it the popular name of 'Cathedral of the Moors.'
There are two excellent pubs, the one in the village centre now being called the Old Inn but within the time of the editor of this page having been called The New Inn! The current name is a more accurate description.
The other pub is a short distance out of the village and is one not easily found in Google, although you will if you try hard enough. It's a small pub, the Rugglestone, and a real connoiseur's dream - not the place to go with a large group but the regulars are very friendly to individual visitors. [edit text][editors]
