Santa Cruz, just south of San Francisco on the California coast, began life as a Spanish mission town, later becoming a seaside pleasure resort, and now is an energetic university town. Despite its many changes, shades of all these pasts remain, in the mission building, the Boardwalk (California's only beachside amusement park) and the incomperable UC Santa Cruz campus.

Despite a tremendous earthquake in 1989, downtown Santa Cruz has rebounded with a revitalized shopping district featuring many interesting small shops.

Santa Cruz also has more than its share of excellent restaurants, weekly farmer's markets, and several great independent natural foods stores.

This city is famous for its surf culture--you can learn more about it at the Surfing Museum located in the lighthouse. Then rent a board and hit the waves! [edit text]  [editors]
