Bryce Canyon National Park is located in the southern part of the state of Utah. It is called a canyon, although it did not come to existence in the classic way canyons are created by flowing water on behalf of Mother Nature. In fact it is a giant amphitheatre created by the erosion as a result of precipitation and wind attacking the rocks. Many pinnacles, which stand in the amphitheatre as if they were spectators, are called hoodoos, some of which reach 200 feet in size (61 metres), and some of which have been names, for example the Thor's Hammer. The elevation of the Bryce Canyon, measured at its rim, varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet (2,400 to 2,700 metres) above the sea level. There are a number of accommodation options available at the park, there is a visitors centre and a restaurant. Good hiking and horseback riding trails are available and no guides are obligatory.
