Travel guide to Saigon

Lunch in Na Trang Market, Vietnam

Whilst the offical name of the city is Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), locally it is still known as Saigon; as the name that dates back centuries.

The city is very vibrant with a lot of traffic, dust, people, motor cycles; yet in a strange way quite alluring.

There aren't many sights to see, as it is more a point to explore the southern regions, some of the more interesting buildings are: Notre Dame Cathedral, the Post Office, Central Market and City Hall. These buildings were built by the French when they occupied the country; but a lot of the other things to see revolve around the war including the Reunification Palace, War Remnants Museum etc, which are all very cheap to enter and gives a good insight into the country's turbulent past. Also 30km outside the city is Cu Chi tunnels which help them win the war.

The food is very cheap and really enjoyable and if in the backpackers area (where you find good 3* and 2* hotels) there are a lot of bars with a really friendly atmosphere. [edit text] [editors]
