First/Last sign on the High Sierra Loop's by eirekay

Yosemite National Park - United States, California We are done! The mileage shown here is the shortest distance, using the Mist Trail. We have gone 17.2 miles total, with packs, but spread over three days. Half Dome can be climbed in one day, starting at 6am and taking a full 12 hours but the hike is strenuous at best. You start at 3,976 feet and end at 8,996 feet so the change is elevation is exhausting, not to mention the steep, rocky and uneven terrain.

mortimer - Aug, 21 2008 12:08pm One thing I never understand is why in amercias Parks the mileage is shown on the sign post for trekking paths. In Switzerland we have indications of time to take you to a place. An normal person can get easy guideance by these indications. With mileage it's not that easy its really depending on the terrain... eirekay - Aug, 21 2008 01:08pm Martin, I agree! This sign gives no indication of how steep and difficult the terrain is. Even the top of Vernal Falls at 1.5 miles will take a solid hour without packs!
