Early Morning Kun Ya (Beetle Nut) Vendor, Rangoon's by el2995

Rangoon - Burma, Yangon Even though it was not quite 5:30 AM, this kun ya (beetle nut) vendor was already doing business outside Rangoon's Central Fish Wholesale Market. Sliced beetle nut is mixed with tobacco, calcium hydroxide paste and lime juice and wrapped in a beetle nut tree leaf to form a small package. It is placed in the mouth and chewed to extract the mildly intoxicating (or so I am told) dark red juices, which are then spit on the ground with seeming reckless abandon.
