Hi Dear seniors
I get tired of all those ever returning arguments about why a picture ist rated not high enough.
Can't we seniors not begin with a good example and stop commenting about the rates that others gave.
I know I have been doing this too in the past but have stopped the arguments.
Sometimes these arguments get people unneccessarily angry what good does that?

Hello Martin,
I completely agree with you. It is very sad to see people argue about their received ratings. I followed one yesterday which indicated racism because of low ratings. This is a very strong accuse on an assumption based on ratings of a picture. I have received myself 3 stars for pics I thought they might go through the roof. But hey... everybody has his/her own taste.
Unfortunately it is not in our hands to stop discussions like this as I believe. It's human nature, you will notice similar behavior wherever there are ratings in live.
Best regards,
Andy

Moin!
One general question regarding ratings: would it be possible to add a switch that I can set to prevent a picture of being rated at all?
It is because maybe I load-up a picture to transport an imagination but do not intend to take parte in the race.

Moin Joe,
interesting point. I will think about it. Right now it is not possible. I was also thinking about a "block member" function which would prevent members you select from rating or commenting your content. Not sure if this would really be a good thing. How do you think about this?
Regards,
andy

Blocking members is not a good thing in my opinion This way a rift is created. The 'goodies' on the one side and the 'badies' on the other. I agree on this opinion Marianne. This is why it is not integrated so far. I believe that this can not be improved by technology or any tools. It is a human problem. The only solution in my eyes is to get more people involved to rate content and as a result get a more diverse rating average. I am working on a tool which will try to enhance the rating experience and get more people involved with rating and more frequently. Again, this is like in real live. If people stop rating (voting) for poltics the minority who still rates will have a higher impact on the results which is not a good thing. So the higher the voting quote, the more reliable the results.
Best regards,
Andy

I completely agree, Andy, that we can't really stop the discussions in General.
I just meant that the seniors would refrain from those type of comments. They should be experienced enough to have found out that such arguments do only harm the community and won't bring us forward.
And I also agree that each person has their own view.
Again I might like to say that 3 Star is not low it's good! (4 very good, 5 excellent)
At least that was what we agreed on when we discussed the rating scheme.
I agree with joe too that sometimes you want to upload a picture just for infomation or to complete a series which makes only sense as a full serie.
Along this thought it could be a good idea if we had the rating of albums as rudi suggested.
The idea of a "ignore" function is not bad. I certainly would have applied it on mrscanada ;-) But still it is only a method of keeping people off and not a thing to help people integrate.

Martin,
I think your suggestion needs more thought. I agree completely that vicious arguments cannot be good. I think it's undignified for seniors - or anybody come to that - to argue publicly about grading of their own photos - as Andy says, accept oter people's view.
On the other hand, if Hugh's frequent suggestion were adopted so that people know where poorer grades are coming from, I see nothing wrong with asking privately for a bit more detail about what should be improved.
However I am not sure about seniors witholding comment when they think a picture by somebody else is underrated. New members in particular may be upset by undergrading and it might cheer them to know that a senior thinks more of the picture than their current grade suggests .
I have done this myself but would stop doing so if the general feeling here is that the practice is harmful.
Cheers

David
Wouldn't be enough to say that you like the picture very much because of this or that without commenting that you don't understand why others gave a lower vote?
You can still empahsize that you like the picture but don't give room for an discussion why others don't like it.

Fair enough, Martin. I do agree with your main point and I'll give it a try. --- Grieve not for that which you cannot do but rejoice in that which you can.
