GLOBO's
GLOBOsapiens is named a travel community.
Can you tell me where in your oppinion is the difference between a traveller and a tourist.
Here are the dictionary listings of Cambridge University:
traveller, US USUALLY traveler
noun
1 someone who travels:
This hotel is for serious travellers, rather than tourists on two-week package holidays.
tourist
noun
1 someone who visits a place for pleasure and interest, usually while they are on holiday:
Millions of tourists visit Rome every year.
Hordes (= very large groups) of tourists flock to the Mediterranean each year.
Disneyworld is one of Florida's major tourist attractions.
The island is very busy during the tourist season.
What makes a tourist a traveler, in your opinion?
How long has a traveler be on his trip to be told a traveler ?
Is it the style of the trip that makes somebody a traveler?
Is it a state of mind?
Can you be a traveler when staying in posh hotels or does it need to be a Backpackers?
I think this discussion could be interesting...

An interesting subject it is...
Travellers vs Tourists
In French we only have one word to describe it. Yet in English the "tourist" is a pleasure trip, while the "traveler" is mostly for business. One will never say I'm a "Business Tourist", but one will say I'm a "Business traveller".
A tourist is one who tours. While a traveller is one who travels. One can be a traveling tourist, but not the other way around.
Nevertheless, travel safely. :-)

The tourist:
- emphasis is on pre-planned points of interest and the target specially
- makes use of package deals and tour-guides (people)
- purpose of a trip is passive relaxation and luxury
- may use high-heels, taxis, cruisers, coaches, and limos
- wants shortest and quickest way to a target and back
- highlights: sun-tanning, nightlife, being seen
- tours with companions: fill the bus, the more the merrier!
- A tourists best place is home
- Says: “service please”
The traveller:
- emphasis is on the route getting there
- makes use of backpacks and maps/travel-guides (books)
- purpose of a trip is active exploration and adventure
- may use boots, bicycles, boats, busses and 4x4’s
- wants to zig-zag along the route
- highlights: lonely beaches, wildlife, scenery
- travels alone, with partner or small groups!
- A travellers home is the world
- Say: “lets do-it-ourselves”
A traveller CAN also be a tourist, taking special tours of say a city or institution, or pausing at a place to get cleaned up and relax, usually only though for a short while!

Hi all
Nothing like a good argument to stir up you Globo's.....How about this off the cuff comparison?
A tourist is usually packaged - his tours are arranged by an agent i.e. someone else who arranges to take him there and tells him what to see and do.
A traveller arranges it himself and takes himself there and does what he wants to do!
*for he of course also read she
Cheers,
Brit --- Cheers!

Hi Brit Ravi GLOBO's
now when it's getting interesting why should we stop it...?
After Britmans definition im definitely out of the traveller category and must be content being a tourist :-(
With the definition a traveller does everything by himself I'm out of range because doing everyting myself takes too much time, time that I don't have when on travels because I only got 2 or 3 weeks in a row...
I always considered myself as a traveller, trying to get to remote places, trying to find my way around when I'm there, never booking an all inclusive arrangement or even a half pension. Unless I go somewhere when nothing else is possible (i.e. maldives).
Anyway for me it's more a state of mind. An open mindedness, always trying to explore something new, inventing new ways around a problem, doing something that hasn't been done in this way befor, eploring new possibilities...
For me it's an general approach to life, one can easily be a traveller in life or a tourist.
Anybody else...
Martin

Hi
Ravi we agree...Martin the tourist is really a traveller in disguise...because he sometimes buys a package and unpackages it - getting the travel elements cheaply and not joining in with the organised bits once there!
We have all bought the bus tour of our destination as an overview - and jumped the bus once it starts to stop oiff at the tourist shops! Perhaps another definition is ....the tourist buys at the tourist shops - the traveller never looks at them...never mind enter them!!
This topic has become fun......
Cheers
Brit --- Cheers!

Hello folks.
Well, tourist and traveler. To me these two words are synonyms in tourist and travel industry.
We, professionals in travel and tourism business think about this two words only how you call yourself only: you can be a tourist with a back pack and a bunch of maps and also you can be a traveler with the same back pack, maps and binoculars.
When we arrange something, we arrange either tour packages or we arrange travel-customized vacations for the same tourist or traveler. Tourists and travelers always come to as, so we could help them with advice and bookings of their air, land, and sea arrangements.
When people go with a groups or without (on customized vacations) they are also tourists or travelers visiting far away places from their original home place. People travel (we say travel) on the prearrange cruise ship from 3 to 40 days –who are they tourists or travelers? I could call them either tourist or travelers. On their way back, when I call them, I always ask:” how was your tour/or I can ask, how was your travel. Time, far away places, and what do you have on your back (backpack) or in your hands (maps and binoculars) dose not make any difference to us as professionals and we also travel and think about ourselves as tourists or travelers-because we visit places away from our home. By the way all tourist companies are travel companies as well. I can say, that I’m in tourism buisiness, but I have a travel company as well. How locals call as when we visit their places? I thnink, they call as tourists, but not travelers.
There is “Board of Tourism” or “Tourist Board”, but not Board of “travelers”
There is Tourist Offices around the world (official names) such as: Indiana Tourism Division, Mexican Government Tourism Office, Monaco Government Tourist and Convention Bureau, Ministry of Tourism and many others around the world with a tourist word.
So, to conclude, we can call ourselves as tourists or travelers (with back pack or without) visiting near and far away places.
Two words came to my mind from a different industry: Taxi, and cab.
It could be a taxicab, a taxi or only cab or taxi driver, or cab driver. Two words, but the same meaning.
Thank You,for reading.
With best wishes to everyone in our community.
Boris
