Exeter - United Kingdom This area of Exeter was first settled by the Celts, taken over by the Romans and became the most important trading port in England, the building of the canal enabled ships to travel up the river Exe. The Countess of Wear built a wier further downstream and Topsham became the nearest access from the estuary for large ships . Many parts of this area have been protected and now attract many tourists from abroad to this and other parts of this historic city.
