Derbent is a most interesting town by the Caspian Sea. In the past was visited by such great travellers as Marco Polo, Afanasi Nikitin, the Dutch Franciscan friar Wilhelm Roebrook (known as Rubruquis), and many other famous travellers.
Among its many wonders, the ancient Synagogue is a must to visit in the historical part of the town. The entrance is free and the Rabbi Ovadeev will show you the beautiful tapestry and frescoes of the interior. Unfortunately, in January 2004, the patio of the synagogue suffered a terrorist act perpetrated by intolerant people.
