Kronshtadt is a military post situated in the isle of Kotin, united to Russia by an isthmus. It belonged to Sweden until 1703 and a few years later the tsar Peter I ordered the construction of a fortress as a defence of Saint Petersburg. In 1917 its garrison supported the October Revolution by marching over Saint Petersburg protected by the battleship Aurora. I bought a cheap tour in a street kiosk of Nevsky Prospekt, besides the Metro Station Gostiny Dvor, in Saint Petersburg, and for about 10 US dollars I joined a group of Russian tourists in a small bus where the guide explained the history of this town, which until recently was closed to foreigners. I visited the interior of the beautiful cathedral, called Morskoi Sobor, or Naval Cathedral. It was converted (until presently) in a military museum, the same as the communists did with Kazanskiy Sobor, in Saint Petersburg, during the Soviet Union. I recommend you this excursion and the one to Valaam monastery in the Lake Ladoga.
