Pueblo Español and Van der Rohe |
|
|
In 1929 we celebrated in the centrically located Plaza Espana of Barcelona an International Fair.
In the construction of the pavilions even participated the German (nationalised American) Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. We also erected a magic fountain with light and music of flamenco and the song “Barcelona” by Montserrat Caballe and Freddy Mercury, an arena for bullfighting, two towers imitating the Piazza San Marcos in Venice, a palace called MNAC, or Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluna, containing an impressive anthology of painting of the private collection of Thyssen Bornemisza, plus frescoes from the Pyrenees Mountains Churches.
And just one hundred metres up you reach the Pueblo Espanol (Spanish Village) with 117 reproductions of the most famous buildings in Spain: Mudejar style churches from Teruel, narrow streets of Santa Cruz in Sevilla, steps of the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, etc.
Inside there are many shops and restaurants.
This visit is pleasant and didactic.
