Valle de Arán (Aran Valley) |
|
|
In this lovely valley, in the Northeast part of Spain, in the middle of the Pyrenees, about 8000 persons live quasi isolated and have developed especial characteristics in our geography.
It is a lovely place with exuberant foliage and pure air to send students with their teachers for a few days’ holidays (when I was a boy my school sent me to the Valle de Arán twice!).
Apart from Spanish, that everybody speaks (and some also speak Catalan), many local people speak an Occitan language called Aranés (derived from the Gascon Occitan), also called Provencal, Languedoc, or Oc language. Aranés is a co official language in that valley where the Garonne “French” river sources are to be found.
There is an old church called San Miguel as their main tourist attraction, and their major economy is based on tourism thanks to their good infrastructures to practice ski, like the Baqueira Beret station installations.
