The Grand Palace was built in 1782 and the complex covers 218,000 sq.m. and is surrounded by 4 walls. King Rama I decided to establish a new capital. The complex contains a number of wats and throne halls. It is also home of the Emerald Buddha, discovered in 1434 in a stupa in Chiang Rai.The buddha has a history of being moved, including a spell in Laos, before being returned by King Rama I.
The site is regarded as very sacred and there are strict dress code guidelines - no bare shoulders, legs or feet.
