Bali Museum dates back to early 20th century when it was built by the Dutch to preserve cultural artifact. (In colonial days many artifacts were brought to the Netherlands and given to museums.) The building itself is as interesting as the exhibits. It consists of 4 buildings, all in different styles to highlight different architectural styles from around Indonesia. The buildings are surrounded by courtyards, full of tropical plants and flowers. The museum is divided into courtyards each with a building. The complex is a mixture between a pura and a puri (temple and palace). There are small shrines with daily offerings, a candi bentar (split temple entrance) and a kulkul tower(drum to summon people).
Gedung (building) Tabanan's theme is music and dance; masks, puppets, Barong and costumes. The Rangda costumes is very colourful. Its pointing fangs, unkempt hair and hugh tongue show that she is an evil character.
