Most people think that hyenas are solely scavangers but it is not like that. When we came down into Ngorongoro crater early in the morning we could closely follow a pair of hyenas hunting down a wildebeest calf.
The hyena came towards our car, crossed the road and accelerated and sped into a heard of wildebeest. They tried to catch a small calf but werent sucessful, returned and went after another one and eventually were sucessful. The kill was quite close to the car so I could take some shots.
Even though it was pretty close, the lens was long (300mm) and the early morning light not very intense therefore the pictures are not up to the normal standard. But seeing hunting hyenas being a special thing I thought I could put them into a slide show for your pleasure...
