Hi All, I was recently surfing the net to find out what were considered the Seven Wonders of the World only to stumble across a website that is trying to redefine them.
So I wondered whether Globo members would like to participate in a survey and let us come up with our own seven wonders.
The options are listed below:
1. Acropolis - Athens, Greece
2. Alhambra - Granada, Spain
3. Angkor Wat - Cambodia
4. Chichen Itza - Yucatan, Mexico
5. Christ Redeemer - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
6. Colosseum - Rome, Italy
7. Statues on Easter Island- Easter Island
8. Eiffel Tower - Paris, France
9. Great Wall of China - China
10. Hagia Sophia - Istanbul, Turkey
11. Kiyomizu Temple - Kyoto, Japan
12. Kremlin/St Basil - Moscow, Russia
13. Machu Picchu - Cusco, Peru
14. Neuschwanstein Castle - Fussen, Germany
15. Petra - Petra, Jordan
16. Pyramids of Giza - Giza, Egypt
17. Statue of Liberty - New York, America
18. Stonehenge - Amesbury, England
19. Sydney Opera House- Sydney, Australia
20. Taj Mahal - Agra, India
21. Timbuktu - Timbuktu, Mali
Can everyone, willing to participate, chose three from the list, in no particular order and let’s just see what we come up with:
If you want to participate on the Global vote you can visit their website (also to view pictures of each structure) on www.n7w.com.
Thanks
Amanda

Amanda,
Thank you for bringing this delightful subject to our attention. What a marvelous thought, to identify the seven 'modern' wonders of the world. Perhaps the only difficulty that I have with the list that your present is the omission of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (St. Louis Arch). That is the tallest known man-made monument ever erected, and is visited by well over 10 million people each year.
From your list it is difficult to choose only three, but I would choose the following:
1. Pyramids of Giza - They were part of the original list of the seven wonders. They still exist, therefore, they are enduring.
2. Macchu Picchu - This is perhaps the most awe-inspiring location that I have ever visited. Traveling to see these ruins awakens a religious experience within each visitor.
3. Taj Mahal - Many in the Western hemisphere consider the Taj as an example of the veru exotic vistas found in the Eastern continents.
These are just my thoughts. Personally, I would choose the Arch over either the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Sydney Opera House, or any of the other 'modern' facilities because of its unique engineering and size.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/news/story/0,,1676487,00.htmlhas an raticle on the subject. It induced me to set the same poser to the group on which I'm a moderator. I get zapped by red ink if I name it here! Actually I asked for nominations of seven in tho categories, natural and man-made.
Actually the top one of my own submissions was not in this list. However four from the list were in my seven and the first three [in order] were
1. The Great Wall of China.
2. The Taj Mahal.
3. Stonehenge.

Thanks all for participating, I was hoping more members would get involved which is why I limited it to 3, but maybe you can provide your chose of seven.
I have to mention that the list of 21 is not something I compiled, there has been a global vote dating back to 2000 and then have narrowed it down to the list I provided.
Here's my list:
Angkor Wat
Chichen Itza,
Christ Redeemer
Statues on Easter Island,
Machu Picchu
Pyramids of Giza
Taj Mahal

Russ,
I believe the St. Louis Arch was initially on the list, but it didn't receive many votes so when the list was reduced to 21 it fell by the wayside.
Also I'm not sure what they will define these seven as but I think the seven wonders of the modern world are:
Empire State Building, Itaipu Dam, CN Tower, Panama Canal,
Channel Tunnel, North Sea Protection Work, and the Golden Gate Bridge
Would you like to add 4 more?

In the list above my favorites are:
13. Machu Picchu - Cusco, Peru
16. Pyramids of Giza - Giza, Egypt
9. Great Wall of China - China
further till best seven:
20. Taj Mahal - Agra, India
7. Statues on Easter Island- Easter Island
18. Stonehenge - Amesbury, England
3. Angkor Wat - Cambodia
The seven wonders of the "ancient" world are well defined (I think 3 do not exist anymore). There are lists of seven wonders of the "natural" and "modern" world etc.
UNESCO does it correctly listing about 800 equaly amazing objects of many kinds around the world. http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/ RR --- Rudolf "Rangutan" Graspointner

Disqualified Burak! You have chosen 3 very good Turkish heritage sites but you must choose 3 from the FINALIST and INTERNATIONAL objects in the list above for THIS current survey! (Let us two members start a new and fair survey later in the year based on the UNESCO list?) I also found a site which lists various 7-wonders in many various categories, see:
http://wonderclub.com/AllWorldWonders.html
it lists:
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
Great Pyramid of Giza
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
Statue of Zeus at Olympia
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
Colossus of Rhodes
Pharos of Alexandria
The Seven Wonders of the Medieval Mind
Stonehenge
Colosseum
Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
Great Wall of China
Porcelain Tower of Nanjing
Hagia Sophia
Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Seven Natural Wonders of the World
Mount Everest
Great Barrier Reef
Grand Canyon
Victoria Falls
Harbor of Rio de Janeiro
Paricutin Volcano
Northern Lights
The Seven Underwater Wonders of the World
Palau
Belize Barrier Reef
Galapagos Islands
Northern Red Sea
Lake Baikal
Great Barrier Reef
Deep Sea Vents
The Seven Wonders of the Modern World
Empire State Building
Itaipú Dam
The CN Tower
Panama Canal
Channel Tunnel
North Sea Protection Works
Golden Gate Bridge
The 7 Forgotten Natural Wonders of the World
Angel Falls
Bay of Fundy
Iguaçú Falls
Krakatoa Island
Mount Fuji
Mount Kilimanjaro
Niagara Falls
The 7 Forgotten Modern Wonders of the World
The Clock Tower (Big Ben)
Eiffel Tower
The Gateway Arch
The Aswan High Dam
Hoover Dam
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Petronas Towers
The 7 Forgotten Wonders of the Medeival Mind:
Abu Simbel Temple
Angkor Wat
Taj Mahal
Mont Saint-Michel
Moai Statues
Parthenon
Shwedagon Pagoda
It is very difficult to compare all of these and all those in Amandas list but let us vote from those last FINALISTS at www.n7w.com now and see how GLOBOchoice compares with the results of the survey at the end of December 2006. IMHO, the top three in no particular order are;
Pyramids of Giza - Giza, Egypt
Great Wall of China - China
Machu Picchu - Cusco, Peru
Honourable mention to;
Statues on Easter Island- Easter Island
Angkor Wat - Cambodia
Acropolis - Athens, Greece
Chichen Itza - Yucatan, Mexico
Colosseum - Rome, Italy
Hagia Sophia - Istanbul, Turkey
Kiyomizu Temple - Kyoto, Japan
Stonehenge - Amesbury, England
Taj Mahal - Agra, India
As far as I'm concerned, the rest are too modern and not really a wonder. A wonder (IMO) is something azaming that was built before we had a knowledge of engineering and other modern technologies. Places like Macchu Picchu, Easter Island, and the Pyramids built by Stone Age societies are far more impressive than the Eiffel Tower or Empire State Building. But I guess that is my opinion. And I like Rudy's lists, because an ancient wonder falls into a different category than a modern or natural wonder.
