Warszawa - Poland, Mazowieckie The Little Insurgent Monument. Numerous children remained in the city at the start of the Warsaw Rising. The youngest hid with their families and guardians in cellars.Others, beginning at age 12 were allowed to help Polish insurgents as communications personnel (delivering letters and orders),guides, and lookouts for the Scouts Field Postal Service.Girls and boys also assisted in the construction of barricades, distributed resistance newspapers and helped medical and supply services. They took part in fire watches and fought flames alongside fire brigades. The children's contributions to the Warsaw Rising were no less important than those of adults. After the fall of the Rising, most children left the city as evacuees, though some were imprisoned in POW camps. source Warsaw Rising Museum.
