Home to devout Catholic women who had not taken vows of poverty over a stretch of 800 years, a sisterhood called the Beguines, who preferred to live in a quiet and peaceful enclave, the most famous Begijnhof is in central Amsterdam - an oasis of green surrounded by classic tall townhouses with a church, statuary, and one of only two wooden houses still extant in the city.
