Delft - Netherlands, Zuid-Holland The central square of Delft is one of the largest in Europe, at one of the highest points of the city, and site of a central market back to the 13th C.
The only statue on the Markt is that of Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), the father of international law from whose work derived the concept of "freedom of the seas ". Revered today, he was imprisoned for life at age 36 for opposing Calvinist doctrine, escaped to Germany, and was returned to the Netherlands only after his death.
