Boca Raton - United States, Florida The entrance and main museum of the Morikami Japanese Garden, located just over the border of Boca Raton in southwestern Delray Beach, opened in 1993 and houses exhibits and a Japanese style restaurant ( in addition to admission desks ). The Gardens celebrate the long ties between south Florida and Japan dating to 1904 when a group of young Japanese farmers opened an experimental agricultural community nearby. The main building is one of the later additions to the Morikami Complex, considered one of South Florida's greatest tourist attractions.
The community never exceeded 35 members and failed in the 1920's but George Sukehi Morikami stayed on and became a successful fruit and vegetable wholesaler. In the 1970's, and in his 80's, Mr. Morikami donated land to Palm Beach County to be used as a park commemorating the pioneering community, known as Yamato - an ancient name for Japan. How often have I driven down Yamato Road and never realized the significance of the name.
