Berlin - Germany, Berlin The centerpiece of the section of Ancient Middle Eastern Art is the huge Ishtar Gate, the eighth and northern entrance to the city of Babylon, constructed by Nebuchadnezzar in 575 BC. It honors the goddess Ishtar and was a double gate. Only the smaller could be fit inside the museum building.
The gate is covered by blue glazed bricks decorated with lions ( symbol of Ishtar ), aurochs ( an extinct breed of cattle and the symobol of the god Adad ) and dragons ( the symbol of the god Mardok ). The gate was excavated by German archaeologists in the early 20th C.
