Berlin - Germany, Berlin First settled in the 1600's as a crossroads for trading routes populated by Hugenots and Jews fleeing religious persecution, the area would grow in importance after the HRE electors built palaces in Potsdam and the terminus of the first railroad to Berlin terminated here (1838). By the late 19th C, Potsdamer Platz featured elegant hotels, embassies, and classic office buildings and residences. After WWI, it became the center of Berlin social life, the busiest intersection in Europe, and home to Europe's first traffic light ( manually operated ).
Destroyed in WWII, the area remained a wasteland till the fall of the Wall. The German government sold rights to the district to four companies, the largest share to Daimler Benz who created an architectural plan for multiple office and commercial buildings. Sony's European headquarters is the ovoid steel and glass building in the image.
