Perhaps the most famous wall painting is the blue monkeys, believed to represent the green Egyptian subsaharan monkeys called vervets. At least one monkey skull was recovered from the ruins so it is believed they were kept as pets or perhaps sacred animals. Monkeys in Minoan culture were considered intermediaries between humans and the gods.
