Berlin - Germany, Berlin In the last phases of the Final Solution to the Jewish Issue, 1800 Jewish men married to non-Jewish women were incarcerated for deportation to the camps in early 1943 when less than 8000 Jews remained in the city. In an almost unheard of protest, these wives and families were joined by many German citizens ( the Final Solution was not common knowledge anywhere in Germany ) in defying the Nazi order. After a week of ever growing protest, the men were released. The protest was memorialized by East German sculptor Ingeborg Hunzinger in the 1980's, a sculpture named the "Block of Women" located on Rosenstrasse near the ruins of the Old Synagogue.
