Rest and Relaxation

Atitlan travelogue picture
This is one of the most relaxing places I have been. The lake is actually the crater of a volcano and it is surrounded with lush vegetation. There is hiking to be done all over the island and you can really escape from the main backpacker seen. It is painfully inexpensive as well. You really get a true feeling for Guatemala here. Water taxis ferry you to the other side of the lake for a small fee. There are hostels at most towns, just be sure before you head to an abscure locale.

Favourite spots:
San Marcos! On the other side of the lake from Panahatchel. It is small and very peaceful. Most wake mid morning, wander around eating fresh fruit prior to a dip in the lake.

What's really great:

The availability of water taxis is very nice. You can ferry from village to village and experience all sorts of different things. If you stay in San Marcos, cruise over to the other side of the lake (some areas you can hop in the back of a taxi for cheap) via pick up truck taxi or water taxi to use internet or meet other backpackers. Everyone is very friendly.

Sights:
Hiking from San Marcos to neighboring villages is the way to go. Plenty of smal trails that takes you through banana farms, small homes, etc.

Accommodations:
In San Marcos, stay at La Paz. They make breakfast, lunch, and grrrreat dinners. It is right in the middle of the jungle and you have a real community feeling. Directly across from San Marcos on the other side of the lake (you can get there by truck too...forgot the name), stay at the Hotel San Fransisco. Cheap and nice. Haggle for room rates here.

Hangouts:
All sorts of places to get a drink and kick back watching BBC
