Coimbra is since 1290 one of the oldest university cities in whole Europe with about 17.000 students. Coimbra is the intellectual and spiritual centre of Portugal - a monument! 1308 -- relocation of the University of Lisbon to Coimbra 1385 - 1433 -- King João I. reigned in Coimbra and created this great city with its different faculties, the Biblioteca Joanina (library of Joanina) and the Jardim Botanico (botanical garden)
