A Glimpse of Laos

Donexao travelogue picture
Donexao is an island in Laos that can be easily visited from Northern Thailand without having to wait for a visa to be granted from the Laos Embassy in Bangkok, which can take up to three days. From Chiang Saen, you can get a temporary entry permit and hire a boat to go across the Mekong River to the island for 300 Baht. It's a nice way to sample Laos and spend a little time on the river.

Favourite spots:

Donexao is essentially a quiet market situated in a village-like setting. The trip out to the island allows a glimpse of children swimming and playing at the water's edge, fishermen casting their nets and villagers watering their livestock. The market itself consists of a series of bungalows which flank an open area dotted with palm trees, with the surrounding homes reflexing the Northern Thai styling.

What's really great:

I was intrigued with the bottles of snake whisky offered for sale, each of which contained an assortment of herbs and a small cobra; I was tempted to buy a small bottle (100 Baht) but figured it would never make it through US Customs. Also enjoyable was the trip up river to the Golden Triangle afterwards, which was included in the 300 Baht fee. Be sure to check out Chedi Luang while in Chiang Saen.

Accommodations:
No accomodations were in evidence, and I'm not sure if the temporary visa would allow an overnight stay.

Restaurants:
I believe there was one restaurant there, with some of the shops offering snacks.
