Well, I arrived about 1pm coming from Luang Prabang. Dropped at the Dokkhoun GH ($5, hw, ac, clean enough) where I stayed. I dropped off my pack and out I went. At the end of the street is a nice market with basic market items near the front. To get to the river and bamboo footbridge you can cut through the market all the way to the back. Going straight down the path when exiting takes you to the river. By the river there are some great views of the surrounding hills. The turn off for me was the loud techno music blaring from the GH across the bridge. Lots of travelers all around. Hard to find real Lao food in town as all the restaurants cater to foreigners. Norkean had ok food. Good place for cave exploring or tubing down the river. Lots of opium offers around town. Gave me the feel of an extended KhaoSan rd/ThaiIslands feel. Great if that is what you are looking for.

Favourite spots: |
At the back of the market down the dirt path to the right is the wet market items. Some interesting things here. Lots of wild game meats up for sale. Loads of squirrel, even saw a flying one for sale. Some large interesting looking birds with big beaks, mekong algae, veggies and such. Walking the small town is a nice way to spend a little time. Can find some nice spots away from the noisey GH's along the river.

Some decent food vendors set up on the streets in the evening. The surrounding scenery is beautiful.

Lots of caving opportunities in VV. You can rent tubes and be taken upriver to float back to VV. Rent a bicycle for the afternoon.

The bus ride from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng is incredible. Awesome mountain views, winding roads, pass through lots of villages, well worth it.
