Yekaterinburg is 1814 Km. from Moscow by train. The city is the centre of the Sverdlosk region and was founded in 1723 (it was named Sverdlosk from 1924 to 1991). Later it was named in honour of Empress Yekaterina II.
Yekaterinburg is most famous as the place where Tsar Nicholas II, his wife and children (the Romanovs) were murdered by the Bolsheviks in July 1918. It was closed to foreigners until 1990 because of its defence plants. It is also the birth place of the former Russian President Boris Yeltsin. The city is living with its mineral wealth.

Favourite spots: |
The Church Of The Blood was built at the emplacement where the Romanovs were murdered. The construction was completed in 2003, so it's still pretty new. When you enter the church you feel peace, but you can' t help stopping to remind yourself how an entire familly was wiped out. Also worth a visit is the Mineral and Geological museum, a huge collection of different minerals are presented. You can also buy souvenirs on your way out.

What's really great: |
At 40 Km. by road you can find the Obelisk, marking the frontier between Europe and Asia, so it's possible to have a foot in Europe and the other in Asia, it 's remarkable! Also worth a visit on the way is the memorial dedicated to the victims of the Gulags during Stalin's rule.
Sights: |
The monument of a giant soldier with a downcast head is dedicated to Russian soldiers who died in conflicts such as the war in Afghanistan. This is also worth a visit.
Accommodations: |
Hotel Oktyabrskaya is a mid range hotel situated in the suburbs about 3 Km. from the centre. The rooms are comfy and the staff are nice.
Restaurants: |
The Sem Sorok restaurant serves an exellent meat stew. They also have fish on the menu and a choice of Jewish food as well.
Other recommendations: |
The Monastry in the emplacement of the Four Brothers mine. It is said that the bodies of the Romanovs were abandoned here. The Monastry is totally in the woods and all buildings are made of same material. It is very peaceful.
