Beethoven’s Opus 27, No. 2 was nicknamed ‘Moonlight Sonata’ after one critic said it reminded him of the moonlight over Lake Lucerne. Lucerne claims to be one of the world’s six most frequently visited cities. It’s a darling Swiss town – clean, bright, friendly, and very touristy.

Favourite spots: |
The beautiful Kapellbrücke was built in 1333, but burned in 1993. It was recreated, including gable paintings of cities holy men and women. Even if it’s not the original, the covered bridge with its colorful flowers, and swans floating below is worth the detour.

What's really great: |
I mentioned it was touristy, but the town comes by it honestly, with great shopping (though probably at higher prices than elsewhere). At the store Bucherer, you’ll find Rolex watched, Mont Blanc pens, Toblerone chocolate, and Swiss Army Knives.

Sights: |
Other sights include the baroque Jesuit Church built in 1677, and the Löwendenkmal – a statue of dying lion carved out of rock (1792), in memory of the Swiss Guard who died at the Tuileries in Paris.

Accommodations: |
Unless you have your own vehicle, I wouldn’t recommend staying at our hotel, as it wasn’t near the city center. Hotel Felmis Horw is a clean hotel, though not especially pretty. It is located across from mini-golf course, where we had fun after sight-seeing. Behind the hotel is a hill – if you walk up it, you’ll see mountains, the lake, and green rolling hills that look to be straight out of the Sound of Music (pictured here in two photos I merged on the computer).

Restaurants: |
We ate dinner at the hotel, but for a snack, got pretzels from a vendor while in town. Yum!

Other recommendations: |
We took a boat across Lake Lucerne to Mount Pilatus (2,132 m). We got to see lots of the floppy eared cows with bells around their necks as we ascended by the world’s steepest cog railway. The view from top wasn’t so great because of the fog, but on other days, it’s supposed to be breathtaking. I found myself holding the wooden fence railings tightly, as there are some incredibly steep drop-offs along the top. While we were up there, a helicopter flew over to drop off materials for the hotel at the top. On the ride down via the gondolas there was a little church perched out on ridge. How did it get there? http://www.pilatus.ch/
