This is the one part of Kenya where the concentration of game that existed in the nineteenth century can still be seen.The most interesting areas are scenically and zoologically,are westwards,signalled by the long ridge of the Oloololo Escarpment. |

Wild migration through baloon flight.
|
|
The maasai mara reserve is arguably Kenyas most popular game sanctuary.It is the most famous and most visited game reserve in Kenya.The films out of Africawas made to a great extent in this sanctuary.There is a profusion of all types of wildlife including the big 5.A spectacle worth seeing is the annualmigration of millions of wildbeests,Zebras and gazelles from serengeti plains across the Tanzania border and the Mara Riverto reach Maasai maragrazing fields from late JuneThe dramatic crossing of the river and the preying on the migrants by predators can be viewed from early July to August.
The game reserve aboundss with birdslife since close to about four hundred and fifty two add species have been recorded.Hot air Baloon safaris are readily available in the park.
Accomodation is plentiful in Maasai mara and range from 5 star lodge to luxury tented camps.There are also spartan tented campsites within the game reserve.
Game walks and night game runs are specialities outside the game reserve.Visitors to the maasai mara Game reserve have easy acess to Lake Naivasha,Magadi and Elementaita.

Keekrok Lodge;
A Large and perennially busy hotel,Longest established place to stay in the reserve,and still has high standareds.Situated in a rather open location,but it is a good hour to closer to Nairobi by road than Mara Serena,its main competator,and handy during the rainy season for access to the plains,There is swimming pool,bougainvillea garden and pleasant walkway round and back to bar overlooking a smalllake,where there are hippos and monkeys.Baloon flights,bush walks,birds walk and game drives are on offer.

Other recommendations: |
Baloon flights.
They are the ultimate in the bush chic.Just watching the inflation and lift-off at dawn is a spectacular sight.From the air,the migration of the wild beests resemble an ants nest.In order to avoid flightening the animals unduly,however there is a minimum height below which the baloons are not permitted to fly.Trips are run by severalof the larger camps and lodges,including Keekrok,serena and fig tree.
You dont have to be staying at the lodge they fly from,they will come and pick you up at 5:30am.

A bit like advertising but an interesting place (more commonly spelled 'Masai Mara' in English like at www.masai-mara.net) |
