The Nazca Lines are known worldwide. There are suspicious and serious theories about them. The latest studies about its meaning are related to religion and productivity, both explanations show interesting facts. You can get there after a six hour drive from Lima. Several buses with different prices are easy to reach yourself. Being there makes you feel as if the past times could start to flow again in any moment. It’s very interesting to approach to the peripheric areas, as the flight over the lines is quite short. If you like the desert this is a perfect place, cause geoglyphs, petroglyphs and archaeological sites can be found all around. You can also find isolated water ponds resembling oasis and very fertile areas full of fruits as you approach the highlands. You can meet people making illegal commercialization of archaeological objects, their economic situation leads them to do so, but to preserve the site you should promote formal activities. Please do not follow them.

Favourite spots: |
While flying over the lines, the major impression comes from the way they match to the landscape. If you take your time to travel across the in between valleys by walking, byking or public transport, you will understand and feel the meaning of these landscape drawings. People in Ingenio valley are very friendly and helpful. If you contact them at the information office in front of the Maria Reiche’s museum, at the Panamerican Highway, they will prepare an special tour to interesting historical and natural sights maintained by the local people.

What's really great: |
I have started a research about rural development in El Ingenio district more than five years ago. My relation to this place started with the people and now covers its cultural and geographical situation. I strongly recommend to take some additional time to stay there, not in the city of Nazca but in the surrounding valleys where diverse present and past cultural expressions can be found. On my first visit to Ingenio I had no money or food for the day before going back home. People offered me fruit in all the villages where I arrived, besides their generosity they were friendly and kind, even now five years after I keep on meeting great people and magic places.

Accommodations: |
Most of hotels and hostels are located in the city of Nasca. Even they’re more expensive, the most interesting ones are the old haciendas converted into hotels. There are several outside the city center.
In the neighbouring valleys you can find basic accomodations mostly runned by families, with common bath but clean and peaceful.

|
Restaurants: |
There are several options for eating in Nasca city, most of them are cheap. Out of the city you will find small family shops where you can eat the local food for a very low price, but there's not much variety. There are special food festivals in Ingenio, the Mango Festival (typical fruit) during the third weekend of February and the Chicharron Festival (locally breed porks) during the second weekend of July. A large variety of dishes and products can be found, and they have shows during all the weekend.

Hi Ingrid,
Unfortunately I did not have the time to visit Nasca when I was in Peru & of course I regret it.
I really enjoyed your report as it was filled with local knowledge as you obviosly understand this area more than any interloper can hope too!
Saludos,
Kerrie |

Nice report Ingrid. It doesn't have the details of a travel guide, but captures the experience...which is sometimes better. good job! |

A nice report Ingrid, it brings back memories from my visit. I just stayed in Nasca and did a flight over the lines, I should have gone to the Valley also. |
