Coming into an unknown city, I love climbing a mountain or getting up onto a rooftop to gain a first impression on where I am. If you like to have an overview about the city of love, there are two good spots that I know.

Favourite spots: |
In daylight and for low budget, go to the shopping mall La Samaritaine which is next to the metro station pont neuf. Take the elevator to the rooftop and enjoy the great view over all sights of Paris. At night, you should go to La Tour Montparnasse, métro Montparnasse and enjoy a drink at the piano bar or the great view by night over the city.

What's really great: |
Why do I recommend La Tour Montparnasse and not La Tour Eiffel? Well, if you climb the Eiffeltower, you can see everything but the Eiffeltower - which is the most important sight in Paris, right?!
Nightlife: |
La Locomotive, métro Pigalle - cheap entry on Sundays
Other recommendations: |
Parc aux Buttes Chaumont - nice parc, no busy tourist place.

They now have signs in the elevators at Samaritaine that expressly forbid people from going to the top for the view... however, that didn't stop me! How about some photos of those great views? |
