My first holiday horror ! I went there on a recommendation from a French guidebook on Santiago de los Caballeros . I did make my reservation by phone 2 nights before my arrival in Santiago , Dominican Republic.

Hostal del Cibao is located on calle Benito-Moncion , no. 40, in Santiago de los Caballeros or more commonly known as Santiago in the Dominican Republic.
It is located in downtown Santiago, one block from the famous dept store La Sirena.
The Hostal Management office serves more as a copy centre ( photocopies, fax ) where the manager , a fiftyish woman, is assisted by a young copy machine help.
You climb a set of stairs ( about 20 steps) that leads to a second floor where the Hostal rooms are located.
The night guardman sleeps on the floor of the entrance of that second floor at night, not a pleasant sight ; after midnight, you have to wake him up to get access to your room.
It is more a residence for Retired single male Dominicans in their sixties or Haitian lower middle class fleeing Haiti; occasionally one or two North American or European single men chasing Dominican women for sexual ecstasy spend a few days in the Hostal.
Get ready for cucarachas or semi-clean toilet or badly lighted rooms.
Good points : downtown, cheap price, safe .
Otherwise , go to the Colonial Hotel for about the same price but much cleaner.
