Kjenndalsbreen glacier, Loen, Stryn.
A typical Norwegian tinytown, with some of the country's more amazing nature. Town centre doesn't hold all that many attractions itself, but the surrounding valleys with glaciers, hikes, summer skiing etc. is quite good.
Favourite spots: |
-Bødalsbreen glacier: Lesser known, lesser visited than famous cruise tourist target Briksdalsbreen - and this makes it way better. No crowds, just this huge glacier. Access from Loen - some public transport, then hitching or renting a car or getting a taxi, followed by a 40 minutes leisurely walk. A glacier walk/climb is highly recommended. -Sigdestad: Restored mountain farm deserted since the fifties, amazing view over the Oppstrynsvatnet lake. Steep hike of 30-90 minutes, depending on shape - but oh so worth it. (www.norsknettskole.no/studentar/IT20h01-bjla/prosjekt/indexsegestad.htm)

What's really great: |
Nature. The place is stunningly beautiful from May to September, then somewhat less stunning during winter =) Oh well, sun shines every now and then in winter too. Loads of nearby activities, like glacier hiking, mountain hiking, mountain biking, rafting, summer skiing, winter skiing, salmon fishing etc etc
Sights: |
Glaciers, valleys, mountains, fjord and waterfalls. Mainly a nature place. There is a National Park Centre (Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalparksenter) with a decent museum exhibition and a film, about 20 kilometers from town centre. The small cafe right besides it is quite nice. And there's Leiten art gallery in the town centre.
Accommodations: |
There is plenty. Major hotels include Hotel Alexandra (Loen), Hotel Loenfjord (Loen), Stryn hotel (Stryn centre), Hjelle Hotel (Oppstryn). Camping spots are very common, most of which rent cabins at a better price than a youth hostel, especially if you're more than one person. Only YH is in town centre (short walk up some hills) and I believe it closes down for winter. Also a bit of private rooms being rented, look for signs along the road.

Nightlife: |
None very good... the Alexandra hotel in Loen has it's Alex Dancing - which is greasy and sleezy to say the least, and crappy music on top of it. In Stryn centre there's Scala Disco in the basement of Stryn Hotel, the only one which actually qualifies as a club. And dancing at the Base Camp pub, more of a rock style place than a disco.
Hangouts: |
In centre: Base Camp (absolutely the best), Johan's Pub (decent but small), Bacchus Restaurant has a pub part. In Oppstryn: Folven Camping and Pub - connected to where most ski tourists stay in summer, wild partying on the most crowded weekends, more chill when less people, DJ every night, occasional rock/alternative bands. And Nygård Pub, the local hangout. Elsewhere: Pubs in all the small centres; Loen, Olden, Innvik etc., but not too familiar with these.

Restaurants: |
-Bacchus Restaurant/Tonningstova: Tends to go bankrupt and reopen every year or so, hence the double naming. Clearly the best food in the town centre - mostly pizzas/Italian. 150-250 NOK range. -Napoli Restaurant: Typical truck stop place close to bus station, kebabs, steaks, good pizzas, hot dogs etc. 50-200 NOK range. -Kafe Hjorten: Excellent food, but small selection and a tendency at random opening hours. Located in the council building (Kulturhuset), where you can also find cinema, theatre, swimming pool and the Leiten art gallery. 150-300 NOK range. -Mett & God: On main street, next to bank. Burgers, fish'n chips, hotdogs and the like, teenager hang out. 30-130 NOK range. -Odin's Lille Brødstue: Bakery, with filled baguettes etc. About 50 NOK a lunch type meal. -Matstova: In Oppstryn, about 20 kilometers east of town centre, next door to Nation Park museum. Traditional homemade food, also sells homemade bakewares. 70-170 NOK range. -Hotel restaurants, classier and pricier.

Other recommendations: |
When you've had enough of scenic views, the centre cinema shows films on Thursday and Sunday, sometimes also Friday - these are usually long time ago released Hollywood actions. Occasional theatre performances or cultural events in the same building. Also a swimming pool with somewhat varying opening hours. And www.nordfjord.no lists special events etc throughout the year.
