It is a small tourist town on the coast of Nambia. It feels like an oasis in the desert with the Namib to the south and the Skeleton coast to the North. The weather is very bizarre. It is often very windy and chilly, and the sky an ugly shade of grey. This is way it seems to be most mornings, but by the afternoon it usually becomes nice and sunny.

Favourite spots: |
I enjoyed walking around town and sunbathing at the small beach on the cold ocean here. The town has a real oasis feel and it is not a long walk in any direction before hitting desert or ocean. The town is kind of a German art deco and many of the tourist shops sell items celebrating the towns German history.

What's really great: |
Quad biking. There are excursions for quad biking or sandboarding on the the road to Walvis Bay and to the north of town to Spitzkoppe for abseiling and hiking.
Accommodations: |
I stayed at Swakopmund Rest Camp in what was called a two room fisherman hut. For two people, it was a good deal at less than $20. There are also a few hostels.
Nightlife: |
I did not go to any clubs. There is a nice cinema here though.
Restaurants: |
Went to a pizza place here which did not impress, but besides that I self catered in small hut kitchen. There were good groceries store here (South African chains). Throughout Namibia there was a local made Reichenstef yogurt that was cheap and good. I do not usually eat a lot of yogurt but throughout Nambia I lived on the stuff.

Other recommendations: |
Walvis Bay is a port city a little over a half hour drive away. Around the port is a bird sanctuary which is worth seeing and there are large dunes just inland which are stunning. There are also excursions a drive up the Skeleton coast. An area there is very popular with sport fisherman. Also, a loop through the Namib desert taking in a few nearby oasises.

Hej! I visited Swakopmund in january and enjoyed it very much. It was summer and the weather was hot - about 25 to 30 degrees and sunny. We also ate at a pizza restaurant - maybe not the same as yours, because it was very good. Called Pizza Box - highly recommend it - good food, delicious pizza, good service and friendly staff. See their website for more www.pizzabox.biz And we celebrated new year in the dunes at a place called Amphi-theatre with a lot of locals. Fantastic! |
