Thunder Bay travelogue picture
Thunder Bay(Superior by nature), Is located on the western edge of Lake Superior. It is the last shipping port deep in the heart of Canada. Thunder Bay is built from 2 cities Port Arthur and Fort William, they joined together in the late 70's. One will also notice that although there is a good mix of Native and white, the majority of the population is Italian/Finnish. It is not a large city with a population of approx. 150,000 but it is very beautiful with cliffs, mtns, lakes, rivers and waterfalls throughout the area. It is also the finishing point for Terry Fox(22). A cancer victim, he started the "Marathon of Hope" after having his leg amputated at age 18. He ran for 143 days-5373kms from St. John's NFLD to Thunder Bay. He died in 1981 of lung cancer, before he could complete his across Canada marathon

Favourite spots:

The Sleeping Giant National Park on the Sibley Penninsula is a great place for camping. The scenery is breathtaking.
The Ojibwe legend is that; a great chief was warned by the deepsea spirit (Nanabijou), that if he told white man the whereabouts of a silver mine, he himself would be put to sleep for a long time. The Chief did not heed the warnings, and well there he is! Nanabijou aka The Sleeping giant.
other favorite spots are Chippewa Park (A Canadian wildlife only zoo), Kakabecca Falls (30min west of TB)

What's really great:

many winter sports.... snowmobiling being very big..over 600km's of trails. cross country skiing over 200km's of trails ice climbing in kakabeka.. (i never had the guts to do it but it looks very cool, albeit dangerous)

Sights:

Autumn along Lake Superior .....can't beat it.. it's so beautiful. If you want a truely awesome scenic drive do so down the hwy south of TB going to Duluth MN. It follows Lake Superior's west coast and is abundant with cliffs where the water crashes into them and sprays the road. Lake Superior is a cold lake and so wide you can't see the other side so it's like taking a ride along the east coast.

Other recommendations:
Centennial Park
Chippewa Park (wildlife Zoo)
trow bridge falls
